New courses have been made available over the last few days.

  • Three courses added are a continuation of the new Code topic pathway specifically for those apprentices who started 1st year using the latest catalog (2017).  The new courses are for that group’s 2nd year of Code training.
  • The new Voice-Data-Video Systems Applications and Installation, Level I course was completed and made available.
  • A new Code Calculations, Complete course was made available for use in training learners on NEC® related math for those outside the apprenticeship.

Continuation of the Code Course Roll-Out

Students who began their apprenticeship prior to the 2017 catalog, covered the NEC® Code courses following the Code and Practices and Code Calculations progression of courses.  These courses are dispersed throughout the apprenticeship.  Those apprentices who started 1st year with the 2017 catalog however, began a progression through these topics using Code, Standards, and Practices 1, Level I in, of course, 1st year. 

This progression now continues with the release of

  • Code, Standards, and Practices 2, Level I,
  • Code, Standards and Practices 2, Level II,
  • Electrical Code Calculations 1, Level I 

for their 2nd year of related training.

 

Thinking about the three new courses, a few questions come to mind.

  • How do I know what apprentices get what course?
  • What changed in the Code course delivery for 2nd year?
  • Will I be able to choose the NEC® version?

How to know what apprentices get what course

  • Any apprentice or group of apprentices who started their Code training on Code and Practices 1 in their 1st year, would stay with the Code and Practices list of courses and also utilize the Code Calculations levels I and II in the 4th and 5th years of apprenticeship.
  • Any apprentice or group of apprentices who started their Code training on Code, Standards and Practices 1 in 1st year, will use the Code, Standards, and Practices 2, Levels I and 2 as well as Electrical Code Calculations in their 2nd year of Code training.
    • To try and shorthand this would be as follows:
      • Those who began on the C&P and CC path, stay on the C&P and CC path
      • Those who began on the CSP and ECC path, stay on the CSP and ECC path

The changes to that group’s 2nd year Code related content

The Code related training for 2nd year will see the following changes in the new CSP and ECC courses as compared to the previous 2nd year C&P course.

  • Lessons referencing the Code Calculations textbook, previously within the Code and Practices 2 Levels I and II courses have been located in Electrical Code Calculations, Level I.
  • The CSP 2 levels I and II differ from the C&P 2 levels I and II by not including the lessons referencing the Code Calculations textbook.

 Voice-Data-Video Applications and Installation Combines the fundamentals needed for both Structured Cabling and Fiber Optics into a single course. In the past, an Inside Wireman would need to cover the content of two separate courses. This individual course combines these two technologies. This course is perfect for Inside Programs that want to continue training both of these technologies in a condensed format.

Code Calculation, Complete

This new course places all topics covered by the Code Calculations textbook in one place. This 21 lesson course is focused on a complete comprehensive training for solving Code-related mathematical issues.  Programs may choose to use the course for a Journey-level class or for those not in the Inside Apprenticeship who want to know more about NEC® related math.

 

The course is identified for use outside the apprenticeship. Inside Apprentices will cover these lessons according to the Core and Advanced credited curriculum utilizing other courses.

 

Three versions of the course are available

  • Code Calculations, Complete, Based on the 2011 NEC®
  • Code Calculations, Complete, Based on the 2014 NEC®
  • Code Calculations, Complete, Based on the 2017 NEC®
